It’s Not All About The Money!
Money is simply a means to and end. I do not love money, I simply love what money can do for me and my family. A lot of people believe money isn’t the most important thing in the world. I totally agree with that. But money does affect the most important things in our lives whether you like it or not.
Why I Choose To Be Rich
The main thing that drove me to become rich wasn’t the pleasures of being rich but rather the excruciating pain of the daily drudgery of a 9-5 job.
I have to find a way to be fulfilled in my life. Most people define themselves by their job or what they study in school. When people meet, its such a cliche to ask each other “What do you do?”. Most often than not you’ll get an answer like “I’m a XXX - Where XXX refers to their job”. My job or what I do for a living doesn’t describe me as a person. I couldn’t translate the person I am and the person I want to become into a typical job or career.
One of my mentors once told me… “Your only job in this world is to become the best you you can ever be!“.
That got me thinking whether I was supposed to live a so called “normal life” like everybody else or maybe I was put in this world for something bigger than a 9-5 job? How in the world am I going to be all I can be while I’m struggling all the time for money?
What Money Means To Me
As far as I’m concerned, money gives me freedom - freedom to live my own life, to become all I can ever be, to able to do whatever I want, whenever I want and where ever I want. I truly believe that I can only discover my own life path by following my heart and taking the road less travelled. Its a life that only I can live because that’s my unique existence, no one else can do it for me and no one else will.
I believe true happiness comes through the fulfilment of our childhood dreams. As we grow older, the more jaded we get and the dreams we had as children slowly fade away. The hardest thing for me to take is to realize when I’m 40 years old and having a long list of regrets. I don’t want to live with “should haves….” and “if onlys….”. Life is short, work is just work. When I’m on my death bed I wouldn’t be thinking of spending more time at the office. I’ll be thinking of family and relationships. These are the things to be cherished in this lifetime.
When I see my parents and relatives working hard at their jobs for money, I sometimes wonder if life has to be that way? They are nice honest people working to make ends meet. They work so hard to make just enough money to survive, sacrificing their time with their family. Don’t they see the whole point of making money is to enable you to live the life you want with your family and friends? They seem to have forgotten how to live and that is very sad indeed.
Oh…. You Shouldn’t Be So Materialistic!
Before we go into the subject of materialism, just what does it mean to be materialistic? According to Microsoft Encarta, materialistic is defined as “focusing on material things: concerned with material wealth and possessions at the expense of spiritual and intellectual values“. Allwords.com defines it as “Relating to or characteristic of materialism. Thesaurus: acquisitive, possessive, greedy, secular, capitalistic, opportunistic; Antonym: spiritual, ascetic“.
Both sources seem to agree that to be focused on material things is not spiritual. Notice Allwords.com has an antonym that says materialistic is the opposite of being spiritual and ascetic.
What I see from this generalization about materialism is:
To be materialistic is to be anti-spiritual
To be spiritual is to self-deny from money, physical comfort and pleasure
Well it is true that money isn’t everything and some rich and famous people seem to be pretty miserable, while there are people who are “poor but happy” but did you know that it is actually possible to live a life of wealth, health, personal fulfilment, love, and peace of mind?
“No matter who may theorize to the contrary, wealth is necessary for the living of a complete life. It may not be necessary to the living of a spiritual life or an intellectual life, but it is necessary to the living of a complete life.” ~ Wallace D. Wattles, Author of The Science of Getting Rich
I couldn’t have said it better myself. I hope you’re not like most people who never pause to sit down to think about what is really important to you in your life and why. Most people simply wake up every morning and go on with their daily routine and go to bed at night.
Success to me doesn’t mean making loads of money and living a luxurious lifestyle. What success means to me is to live my personal mission and enjoy the process.
I’m just someone who wants wealth, health, personal fulfilment, love, and peace of mind and I refuse to settle for anything less. This is the life I choose to live, it is the way I must live. The journey is not easy but it’s definitely very fulfilling.
