Who Is Vincent Rich?

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Vincent L (廖泓智) is 25 years old, currently living on the tiny island of Singapore (but he can’t wait to move out of it soon enough). Currently “unemployable” by choice and absolutely proud it. After serving his compulsory military service (from June 2002 to October 2004) in the Singapore Armed Forces and a string of unhappy jobs, Vincent made a promise to himself to become free of JOBs to create a life of his dreams no matter how hard it takes.
In his free time, Vincent enjoys reading, writing, watching movies, playing with his cat, building Web sites, swimming, running, listening to his favourite band Oasis and other relaxing activities.
Vincent has been obsessed with Web development since he was 17. He firmly believes that the Internet is the best thing since sliced bread. He continually searches for ways to leverage on the Internet to make money, build communities online, have fun, make friends and a lot more!
Vincent enjoys reading and learning about the latest trends on the Internet. He is constantly reading about topics like XHMTL/CSS, PHP, MySQL, blogging, social networks, Google AdSense, banner advertising, affiliate program marketing, Ubuntu Server, Linux, XAMPP and search engine optimization. Therefore you will see stuff like that posted randomly on this web site.
Vincent understands that he can be a bit blunt and irritating at times but most of the time he’s nice.
Vincent Rich’s Personal Mission Statement

There Is A Better Way To Live

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

I decided to rebel against the status quo. I wasn’t satisfied with the way things were and I wanted to change it. I made a choice to live my own life, moving away from the herd to follow my heart and trust that it will lead me to the become the person I want to be.
That was the one decision that could change the course of my entire life.

Everything I Learnt About Money….

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

I was raised in a typical middle class family. We’re not rich or poor, always somewhere in the middle. We’ve always been the average family in terms of our income level. I’m going to share with you everything I was told about money from my family and school.
Straight From My Old Man’s Mouth
“One should never aspire to be too outstanding. Son, you should not be too stupid and don’t try to be too smart either. Just be average, you can’t go wrong like that. Just be normal and stick to the basics. I hope you do well in school so that you’ll get a nice stable income from a job. When you have gained some working experience, maybe start your own business? Get some life insurance because you’re going to need it. Save your money for a rainy day. Hopefully by the time you reach my age (he’s about 60 years old), you’ll have enough money to support yourself and maintain your lifestyle with your life insurance payout and government savings plan. You and me, we’re just average. What more you want from life?”
I love my dad. The problem is my dad is over 60 years old. He’s working 7 days a week. He’s still in debt and he doesn’t have enough money to retire. I don’t think he has a clue when he’s going to retire or whether he actually planned to retire? He’s been doing the same thing over and over again for over 30 years and too bad for him it’s still not working. Yet he insists that I follow his advice. I’m sorry dad… I can’t do that. If it didn’t work for you, why do you think it will work for me in this time and age? Does that make sense to you?
Words Of Wisdom From My Loving Mum
“Oh my dear baby son, you’re still young. You don’t understand a lot of things. When you go out and work, you’ll understand that sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do to survive. Work is work, who says its supposed to be fun? I hate my job, my colleagues, my boss. What can I do? I still need to eat you know? You say you want to be rich? Oh please stop dreaming and don’t get your hopes up son. It’s not as easy as you think. You’re so naive!”
You know my mum loves me. She doesn’t want me to get hurt and go through too much risk and failure. I do get very pissed off when she keeps telling me “You don’t know anything son!”.
I love my mum. Too bad she’s not in very good financial shape either. She’s over 55, working for someone she hates, with people around her that she hates and she gets peanuts for it. Like my dad, she’s not retired too. Life is tough for my parents. They’re counting on me to let them retire so that they can finally leech money off me and enjoy their golden years.
What I Learnt From School
After 15 years in a sheltered school environment, I find myself without the practical skills and useable knowledge I need to make some serious money. School has failed terribly in preparing me for life in the real world. The goal posts were clear cut in school. You want to get into a university? Easy! The path is already laid out for you. First you complete primary school, high school and tertiary school. You know the rules, study hard (or cram hard enough) and get good enough grades. What about life outside school? You don’t know the rules any more! Or maybe the rules have changed. You’ll have to figure out yourself and your own path if not someone else will do it for you. No one owes you a living. There are multiple solutions to everything.
I didn’t learn much about realizing my full potential even though that was what school was supposed to do. I was told to focus on superficial things like grades while neglecting my personal growth, creativity and money making skills. I don’t think I can remember less than 10% of what I learnt in school and the I don’t think I have applied more than 10% of what I learnt in school. Sometimes I feel like my time in school was for nothing. What a waste of time and money.
I didn’t do very well in school and I didn’t drop out of school. I was always at the bottom end of the grade scale. I probably didn’t deserve it because I never really thought school mattered much to me. I have always rebelled against the false standards of measure put on me. My grades don’t determine my self-worth. I spent a lot of my time after high school doing part time and freelance web development work because I knew I was never going to get a good job with my lousy grades so I wanted to differentiate myself from the crowd with my web development skills. I gained a lot of work experience and made some great friends. I’m grateful for being accepted as an apprentice in some web development companies and my time in a E-Commerce startup. That helped form a lot of my beliefs and attitudes.
Dad + Mum + School
With all these influences in my life, it’s hardly any surprise that I grew up believing that I was only an average person. It’s good and honourable to be struggling and making ends meet. Money is not going to make me happy, money will make me very unhappy because the rich and famous are unhappy. I might have to work for the rest of my life in a job I hate without having a chance to retire young, retire rich. Works sucks and life’s a bitch and there is nothing I can do about it. Isn’t that such a tragedy?
Lucky for you and me, we don’t have to live like that if we choose not to. There Is A Better Way To Live.

It’s Not All About The Money!

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Money is simply a means to and end. I do not love money, I simply love what money can do for me and my family. A lot of people believe money isn’t the most important thing in the world. I totally agree with that. But money does affect the most important things in our lives whether you like it or not.
Why I Choose To Be Rich
The main thing that drove me to become rich wasn’t the pleasures of being rich but rather the excruciating pain of the daily drudgery of a 9-5 job.
I have to find a way to be fulfilled in my life. Most people define themselves by their job or what they study in school. When people meet, its such a cliche to ask each other “What do you do?”. Most often than not you’ll get an answer like “I’m a XXX - Where XXX refers to their job”. My job or what I do for a living doesn’t describe me as a person. I couldn’t translate the person I am and the person I want to become into a typical job or career.
One of my mentors once told me… “Your only job in this world is to become the best you you can ever be!“.
That got me thinking whether I was supposed to live a so called “normal life” like everybody else or maybe I was put in this world for something bigger than a 9-5 job? How in the world am I going to be all I can be while I’m struggling all the time for money?
What Money Means To Me
As far as I’m concerned, money gives me freedom - freedom to live my own life, to become all I can ever be, to able to do whatever I want, whenever I want and where ever I want. I truly believe that I can only discover my own life path by following my heart and taking the road less travelled. Its a life that only I can live because that’s my unique existence, no one else can do it for me and no one else will.
I believe true happiness comes through the fulfilment of our childhood dreams. As we grow older, the more jaded we get and the dreams we had as children slowly fade away. The hardest thing for me to take is to realize when I’m 40 years old and having a long list of regrets. I don’t want to live with “should haves….” and “if onlys….”. Life is short, work is just work. When I’m on my death bed I wouldn’t be thinking of spending more time at the office. I’ll be thinking of family and relationships. These are the things to be cherished in this lifetime.
When I see my parents and relatives working hard at their jobs for money, I sometimes wonder if life has to be that way? They are nice honest people working to make ends meet. They work so hard to make just enough money to survive, sacrificing their time with their family. Don’t they see the whole point of making money is to enable you to live the life you want with your family and friends? They seem to have forgotten how to live and that is very sad indeed.
Oh…. You Shouldn’t Be So Materialistic!
Before we go into the subject of materialism, just what does it mean to be materialistic? According to Microsoft Encarta, materialistic is defined as “focusing on material things: concerned with material wealth and possessions at the expense of spiritual and intellectual values“. Allwords.com defines it as “Relating to or characteristic of materialism. Thesaurus: acquisitive, possessive, greedy, secular, capitalistic, opportunistic; Antonym: spiritual, ascetic“.
Both sources seem to agree that to be focused on material things is not spiritual. Notice Allwords.com has an antonym that says materialistic is the opposite of being spiritual and ascetic.
What I see from this generalization about materialism is:

Everything About VincentRich.com

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Hello and welcome to Vincent Rich’s blog. This is a blog about my journey from being just over broke to achieving financial freedom! Thanks for taking the time to allow me to introduce myself and to let you know what this blog is all about.
What This Blog Is
I decided to write a blog to show people how I make money on the Internet. I’m unhappy with the fact that there isn’t enough honest and useable content out there about making money on the internet. While most internet marketing experts tell you what to do, I will show you how to do it with my articles and blog once I have figured out how to do it properly. I’ll include updates on affiliate program marketing, advertising revenue via Google AdSense (plus other advertisting networks like Chitika, Casale Media, Burst Media etc), and just about anything related to making money on the internet.
I do not claim to be an internet marketing guru neither do I guarantee that what you’ll learn from this site will make you rich. I’m a beginner in this internet marketing game and I’m still learning. I hope you’ll be able to learn from some of my mistakes and hopefully help me out one way or another.
What This Blog Is Not
If you’re looking for a place to read about gossip and other nonsense, this is definitely not the place for you. Why not visit Blogger for a list of blogs to get a peep into someone else’s private life if that’s what you want?
I didn’t write a blog to tell the world about the mundane things that happened in my day to day life. Maybe that’s for my own personal diary. Some things are meant to be private and I want them to stay that way. Even if I do share something about my life, I’ll share it with you because its important and I’ll explain to you why its important.
Who This Blog Is For
This blog is for those who want to know about the truth about making money on the internet. Someone who is open to making money outside a job, someone who wants more out of life, someone who is bored and just wants to read about me in their free time….
How Did This Blog Come About?
The idea came to me sometime in January 2004. I realised the number 1 reason why I have been struggling to make money was because I never thought of myself as a rich person even though I wanted to be one. In my mind, I was this young kid struggling to make money to get by with nothing but a dream of becoming rich and having nothing to show for it.
How can I create a positive self image of myself as a rich person? What if rich were my middle name? Would that create a buffer for the “bad luck” my last name was giving me? From where I come from, my last name “Liaw” means death, a goner, “its over”, “you’re finished”. I’m not ashamed of my family name. Somehow it does seem to plant some negative images in to my mind whenever I read my own name….
All my life I have worked hard for money. I worked my butt off since I was 17 (shortly after I left high school) working part time at Web Development companies while I was still in school. I accepted any amount for money they gave me because I wanted some working experience and to learn first hand what life was like in the “real world”. The money was terrible… SGD $550 a month was my “apprentice salary”. It grew to a couple a hundred bucks per project when I was 18 - 20. My highest pay check was SGD $2200 for 1 and a half month’s worth of hark work. From age 20 - 22, my income dropped to SGD $350 - SGD $440 a month after being drafted to the Singapore Army.
For 5 years I’ve been working hard for small bucks. I’m sick and tired of struggling. I simply don’t want to live like this anymore. I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and take the necessary steps to turn my life around.
With my new internet identity “Vincent Rich”, I took the next step in registering a domain name “VincentRich.com” from RegisterFly.com. I didn’t think it would become a blog but I was inspired to write a blog after reading the article How To Get A Book Deal With Your Blog at Blogger’s web site. I believe everyone has a book within themselves. I know that if I write a little everyday, over time I would have enough content for a book.
What you’re looking at right now are bits and pieces of my untitled book. Its going to be a great adventure in the coming years and I invite you to be a part of it. I hope you’ll enjoy my blog and thanks once again for visiting!
Please read on to learn why I believe the whole point of making money is Not All About The Money!
